Frequently Asked Questions
What is dichroic glass? Dichroic glass is a multi layer coating placed on glass by using a highly technical vacuum desposition process. Quartz crystal and metal oxide are vaporized with an electron beam in an airless chamber. As the vapor floats upward it attaches itself then condenses on the surface of the glass. The coating that is created is very similar to a gemstone and by carefully controlling it's thickness, different colors are obtained. The main characteristic of dichroic glass is that it has a transmitted color and a completely different reflective color. The transmitted color is the color you see as you look through the clear glass and the reflective color is the color that reflects off of it. These two colors shift depending on the angle of view.

What are fusing and slumping? Glass fusing is the process of using a kiln to join together pieces of glass. If you apply heat to glass it will soften. If you continue to apply heat, the glass will become more fluid and flow together. Bending and shaping glass is called slumping. An example of this is using a mold to cause already fused glass to take on the shape of a bowl, plate, or similar object.

What kind of glass do you use? Glasses that are tested compatible. Two main systems of glass exist for fusing. 90 C.O.E. and 96 C.O.E. C.O.E. stands for co-efficients of expansion. Glass must expand at the same rate otherwise it will create stress and break or otherwise deform. Each of these two C.O.E.'s have a broad range of glass including, cathedrals (transluscent), Opalescents (opaque), iridecent and dichroic.
